HOW WE HELP MAKE VAT RETURNS NO HASSLE
Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in 1973 as a tax on the sale of goods and services and is the third largest source of income for the Government after Income Tax and National Insurance.
Your VAT obligations
You must register with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for VAT if your taxable turnover is greater than £83,000, although you can choose to register even if your turnover is less. If you’ve charged more VAT than you’ve paid, you have to pay the difference to HMRC and if you’ve paid more VAT than you’ve charged, you can reclaim the difference from HMRC.
VAT is charged on the sale or loaning of goods and services, the selling of business assets, commission charged and even the sale of items to staff, such as canteen meals.
So that HMRC is kept up-to-date on your VAT activity, every three months you must submit a VAT Return for what is known as your accounting period. The return contains records of activity such as:
- your total sales and purchases
- the amount of VAT you owe
- the amount of VAT you can reclaim
You must submit a VAT Return even if you have no VAT to pay or reclaim.
